Currently, the City of Belleville has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, strategic, and dynamic individual to join the Engineering and Development Department as an Engineering Design Technologist.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

This position is responsible for working with surveying and design teams in the pre-engineering, design and contract preparation of municipal infrastructure projects including roads, sidewalks, watermains, storm and sanitary sewers, intersection improvements, and watercourse improvements.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assemble all property information for the particular project at hand including existing property lines, easements, rights-of-way and widenings.
  • Be responsible for importing and exporting of topographical survey data to and from AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Prepare preliminary, final construction and as-built drawings for municipal engineering projects.
  • Be a proficient user of AutoCAD Civil 3D and familiar with operations including: corridors and assemblies, gravity pipe networks, pressure pipe networks, existing and proposed ground surfaces, grading tools, data links and references.
  • Be a proficient designer and familiar with the design process and standards for municipal roadways including: horizontal and vertical alignments, storm sewer and sanitary sewer collection systems, and watermain distribution systems. 
  • Perform quantity calculations for contract items such as: earth excavation, surface areas, pipes and structures, and other various items.  
  • Infrastructure network mapping for: roads, sanitary sewers, storm drainage, watermains and bridges.
  • Database management including the maintenance and updating of a filing system for drawings, design sheets, CCTV reports, electronic files and consultant reports.  Input data to Document Management Software.  Update road, bridge, culvert, sewers and other municipal infrastructure Asset Management Databases.
  • Digitize and scan drawings and other records.
  • Use and perform basic maintenance of plotter and scanner hardware equipment.
  • Assist in the presentation of public presentations related to capital projects and initiative of other Departments.
  • Prepare key plans, maps, drawings and sketches for budget reports, reports to Council and reports for external agencies and consultants.  Prepare other miscellaneous drawings.  Deal with inquiries for information and printing and copying engineering drawings.
  • Have a working knowledge of robotic total station and GPS survey equipment.
  • Undertake field visits to project sites as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED TRAINING/SKILLS:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate of a Community College Civil Engineering Technology Program or equivalent with C.E.T. Certification. 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid class “G” driver license
WORK EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Highly computer literate and proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcView, Access Database, Microsoft Office Suite, and other Engineering software such as AutoTurn.
  • 3-5 years of relevant CADD design experience within an engineering environment with good public relations skills. (municipal experience preferred)
  • Possess knowledge of standards and specifications such as OPSS, OPSD, TAC, Ministry of Environment guidelines and requirements as well as the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Autodesk Civil 3D Infrastructure Design Certification
  • Membership with OACETT and have or are working towards obtaining the C.E.T. designation. 
  • Completion of any of the courses offered through Ontario Good Roads in Municipal Infrastructure Training or Guelph Road School.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with surveying software packages including robotic total station windows-based data collection in GPS RTK format.
  • Possess knowledge of GIS.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal, time and project management skills.
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
