Currently, the City of Belleville has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, strategic, and dynamic individuals to join our Transportation and Operations Services Department as a General Operator.

Hours: 40 hours per week, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM, Monday to Friday or 10:30 PM – 7:00 AM Sunday to Thursday

Salary: $35.69 per hour

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
Reporting to the Operations Supervisors, the General Operator is responsible for completing tasks and operating equipment to ensure that the municipal road system and related municipal properties are maintained in a safe and reliable manner.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide timely and accurate information to the Operations Supervisors and respond appropriately to their decisions and directions
  • Effectively perform all tasks assigned
  • Erect construction traffic signs in the municipal road system in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act and any Municipal By-laws.
  • Perform general labour and work activities as required, including operating, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining municipal assets.
  • Be courteous to the public and exercise care and respect when using equipment.
  • Communicate professionally, and effectively with all stakeholders including members of the general public, promoting a high standard of customer service. 
  • Be aware of and follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act and all City policies relative to the Department.
  • Documentation based on job within general operator grouping, (e.g. work order forms, logbook, hours of work, daily work records, email, reinstatement diagrams, traffic protection plans etc.)
  • Wear/use Personal Protective Equipment and other Safety equipment as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Duties and Responsibilities also include performance of any of the following:
  • Downtown Operator
  • Lawn Mower Operator (self-propelled)
  • Leaf & Yard Operator
  • Paint Machine Operator
  • Roller Operator
  • Trackless Operator
  • Tractor Operator
  • Truck Driver
  • Waste Site Operator

QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM EDUCATION
  • Minimum Grade 12 High School Diploma
  • Valid DZ License with an Air Brake Certificate and a clean driver’s abstract to be held and maintained.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (“CRC”) prior to commencing work at the City of Belleville.
ASSET EDUCATION
  • Valid First Aid Certification with CPR -A
  • Possession of valid Book 7 – Temporary Traffic Control Certification
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act Regulations relative to signage and pavement markings
  • Comprehensive knowledge of municipal urban, semi-urban and/or rural infrastructure matters
  • Demonstrated ability to operate the equipment mentioned above
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a construction based working environment operating equipment.
ASSET EXPERIENCE
  • Experience in municipal urban, semi-urban and/or rural infrastructure matters including equipment utilized in the road system.
  • Experience operating a snowplow
  • Experience operating large maintenance vehicles
Note: A combination of relevant work experience and education may be considered.
