Currently, the City of Belleville has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, strategic, and dynamic individual to join our Transportation and Operations Services Department as a Traffic Technician.

Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM. There is a rotating on call schedule.
Employee Group: Union - CUPE
Salary: $40.86 per hour plus $1.85 shift premium as applicable.
Closing Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2026 at 4:30 PM

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
Reporting to the Operations Supervisor, the Traffic Technician is to maintain and overs the functioning and installation from design to construction of the traffic light/streetlight systems within the city to facilitate safe and efficient traffic flow.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide timely, accurate advice to the Manager/supervisor and for making decisions related to the safe, efficient and effective management of the municipal roads and traffic system.
  • Develop and schedule work priorities
  •  Perform traffic signal maintenance/emergency after hours field work.Be responsible for the installation and design of new and modified signal equipment and complete installation of new intersections
  • Collaborate and work with public works personnel and sub-contractors in the construction, installation, maintenance, repair and operation of traffic signal/streetlight systems. Conduct electrical/electronic repair of traffic signal equipment in-shop, software/programming debugging Be responsible for administrative duties including preparation of budget requirements, reports, proposals, designs, project estimates, general inquiries regarding traffic signals from the public, police and internal departments. Investigate and communicate with suppliers of traffic control equipment and recommend various innovations and improvements to the traffic infrastructure to the City Engineer and Operations (Traffic) supervisor.
  • Perform traffic counts, analyze data, traffic signal justification, signal timing/pattern programming
  • Wear and Use Personal Protective Equipment, as required Communicate professionally, and effectively with all staff, contractors, agencies and members of the general public, promoting a high standard of customer service.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM EDUCATION:
  • Construction and Maintenance Electrician (309A)
  • Demonstrated Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, specialized traffic control software and design software, computer hardware experience for interconnection to traffic control equipment
  • Valid Class G Driver’s Licence with Clean driver’s abstract to be held and maintained.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (“CRC”) prior to commencing work at the City of Belleville.
ASSET EDUCATION:
  • Certificated Traffic Technician by International Municipal Signal Association
  • Work Zone
  • Traffic Signal Levels I, II
  • Traffic Signal Level II Field Technician
  • Traffic Signal Level II Construction Technician
  • Traffic Signal Level II Design/Engineering Technician
  • Traffic Signal Level I Roadway Lighting Technician
  • Traffic Signal Inspector
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
  • Four (4) years’ experience as a certified electrician with traffic signal or programmable logic controllers (PLC) knowledge.
ASSET EXPERIENCE:
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience
